Paper Cosmos Flower Template

In 2020, I first shared this paper cosmos flower as a free project.
At the time, many families were spending long days at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. I wanted to share something simple that parents and children could make together, even if it only gave them thirty or forty minutes of quiet creative time.
So I released the printable cosmos template for free alongside my YouTube tutorial for making a paper cosmos magnet.
Years later, I find myself returning to the same photographs and template.
At the time, I thought the design was complete. Looking at it again now, I begin to notice things I didn’t see then.

당시는 코로나로 집에서 긴 시간을 보내야 했던 시기였어요. 특히 아이들과 하루 종일 함께 시간을 보내야 하는 분들이 많았고, 집에서 30~40분이라도 함께 즐겁게 만들 수 있는 것이 있으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다.
그래서 유튜브에 공개했던 코스모스 마그넷 만들기 영상과 함께 종이 코스모스 도안을 무료로 나누었어요.
시간이 꽤 흐른 지금, 그때의 사진과 도안을 다시 꺼내봅니다.
완성된 도안이라고 생각했는데 그때와는 조금 다른 시선으로 보게 됩니다.

What Makes a Paper Cosmos Flower?
| 종이 코스모스는 어떻게 만들어질까요?

A cosmos looks relatively simple at first.
Its petals radiate around a yellow center, but the character of the flower comes from smaller details: the gently notched petal edges, thin petals, and the lightness of the overall form.
My original 2020 paper cosmos flower template does not attempt to reproduce every botanical detail. I simplified the structure intentionally so that the flower could be cut and assembled by hand without complicated tools.
This makes the original template particularly approachable for a first paper-flower project.

코스모스는 언뜻 보면 구조가 단순한 꽃입니다.
꽃잎이 중심을 둘러싸고 있고 가운데에는 노란 꽃술이 모여 있지요. 하지만 조금 더 자세히 바라보면 꽃잎 끝의 작은 굴곡과 얇은 꽃잎이 코스모스 특유의 가볍고 흔들리는 인상을 만들어냅니다.
제가 2020년에 디자인한 코스모스 도안은 이런 특징을 모두 사실적으로 재현하기보다 종이로 쉽게 만들어볼 수 있도록 형태를 단순화한 버전입니다. 그래서 처음 종이꽃을 만들어보는 분들도 비교적 부담 없이 시작할 수 있어요.

The template creates the basic structure, but it does not determine the entire finished flower.
How much you curve each petal, how the layers overlap, and even the paper you choose will subtly change the result. This is something I came to understand more clearly after making paper flowers for years. Rather than trying to make the first flower perfect, make one and observe it. On the second flower, adjust one small detail.

Paper flowers often improve through this kind of repetition.

도안이 꽃의 기본적인 구조를 만들어주지만 완성된 형태를 전부 결정하지는 않습니다. 꽃잎에 어느 정도의 곡선을 주는지, 두 장의 꽃잎을 어떻게 겹치는지, 어떤 색과 질감의 종이를 선택하는지에 따라 같은 도안에서도 조금씩 다른 꽃이 만들어져요.

오랫동안 종이꽃을 만들면서 저 역시 이 부분을 조금씩 더 중요하게 생각하게 되었어요. 첫 송이부터 완벽한 형태를 만들려고 하기보다 우선 한 송이를 만들어보세요. 그리고 그 꽃을 관찰한 뒤 두 번째 꽃에서 한 가지를 조금 바꾸어보는 방법을 추천합니다. 종이꽃은 이런 작은 반복 속에서 점점 원하는 형태를 찾아가기 좋아요.

Materials for Making Paper Cosmos
| 종이 코스모스 만들기 준비물

You do not need many specialized materials for this project.

• Colored paper
• Scissors
• Paper glue
• A simple shaping tool
• Decorative scissors, optional
• Small magnet, optional

For the original flowers, I used Doosung OA Fancy Paper in bright red and deep pink. You do not need to use exactly the same paper. For this small flower, I recommend starting with paper that is easy to cut and responsive enough to shape gently by hand. Thicker is not automatically better. For small petals, paper that is too rigid can make subtle curves more difficult to create.

2020년 처음 만들었을 때는 두성 OA 팬시페이퍼의 선홍색과 진분홍색을 사용했습니다. 하지만 꼭 같은 종이를 사용할 필요는 없어요. 작은 코스모스에서는 종이가 무조건 두꺼울수록 좋다기보다 손으로 쉽게 자르고 원하는 방향으로 움직일 수 있는지를 먼저 살펴보는 편이 좋습니다.

어떤 종이를 선택하면 좋을까요?

If you are making this project with children, another option is to print the template on white A4 paper first. Color the petals with pencils or crayons before cutting them out. The result does not need to match a real cosmos. Each flower can have its own colors.

아이와 함께 만든다면 흰색 A4 용지에 도안을 출력한 뒤 색연필이나 크레용으로 먼저 색칠해도 좋아요. 실제 코스모스와 똑같은 색이어야 할 이유도 없습니다. 각자 원하는 색을 고른다면 세상에 하나뿐인 코스모스가 만들어지겠죠?

How to Make a Paper Cosmos Flower
| 종이 코스모스 만드는 법

Step 1. Print and Cut the Template. 도안을 출력하고 꽃잎을 잘라주세요

Print the free PDF template on your chosen paper.
Cut around the outline of each petal piece. When working around small curves, try rotating the paper gradually rather than forcing the scissors to turn sharply. This usually gives you more control.

무료 PDF 코스모스 도안을 원하는 종이에 출력한 뒤 꽃잎의 외곽선을 따라 잘라주세요. 작은 곡선을 자를 때는 가위를 크게 움직이기보다 종이를 조금씩 돌려가며 자르면 훨씬 안정적으로 형태를 따라갈 수 있습니다.

Step 2. Shape the Petals. 꽃잎에 곡선을 만들어주세요

Once cut, gently shape the petals rather than leaving them completely flat.
There is no single correct amount of curvature.
Real flowers do not hold every petal at exactly the same angle either.
Small variations often make a paper flower feel more natural.

잘라낸 꽃잎은 그대로 사용하기보다 가볍게 결을 만들고 곡선을 만들어줍니다.
여기서 처음 만들 때 자주 생기는 질문이 있어요.

꽃잎을 얼마나 구부려야 할까요?

정해진 하나의 각도는 없습니다. 실제 꽃에서도 모든 꽃잎이 같은 방향으로 움직이지 않듯, 종이꽃 역시 모든 꽃잎을 똑같이 만드는 것보다 조금씩 다른 움직임을 주었을 때 자연스럽게 느껴지는 경우가 많아요.

Step 3. Layer the Petals. 꽃잎을 엇갈리게 겹쳐주세요

Layer the petal pieces so that the upper petals sit between the gaps of the lower layer.
Before applying glue, place the pieces together and rotate them slightly until the spacing feels balanced.

꽃잎 조각은 서로 엇갈리도록 겹쳐 붙입니다. 바로 접착제를 바르기보다 먼저 두 장을 올려놓고 조금씩 돌려보세요. 아래쪽 꽃잎 사이로 위쪽 꽃잎이 자연스럽게 보이는 위치를 찾은 다음 고정하면 수정하기가 훨씬 쉽습니다.

Step 4. Make the Yellow Flower Center. 노란 꽃술을 만듭니다

Cut a narrow strip of yellow paper and make a series of fine cuts along one edge.
Do not cut all the way through. Leave the bottom edge connected.
Roll the strip tightly and secure it with glue to form the center of the cosmos.

노란색 종이를 길게 준비하고 한쪽에 촘촘하게 가위집을 냅니다.
이때 종이를 끝까지 자르지 않고 아래쪽 연결 부분을 남겨주세요.
가위집을 낸 종이를 돌돌 말아 접착제로 고정하면 작은 꽃술이 만들어집니다.

Step 5. Assemble the Flower. 꽃잎과 꽃술을 조립합니다

Attach the finished yellow center to the middle of the layered petals.
Allow the glue to set before making the final small adjustments to the petals.
If you want to recreate the original 2020 project, attach a small magnet to the back.

완성된 꽃술을 겹쳐둔 꽃잎 가운데 붙입니다.
접착제가 충분히 고정된 다음 꽃잎의 방향을 조금씩 조절하면 종이 코스모스 한 송이가 완성됩니다.
2020년에 공개했던 원래 프로젝트처럼 만들고 싶다면 뒷면에 작은 자석을 붙여 코스모스 마그넷으로 활용할 수도 있어요.

Some paper-flower movements are easier to understand in motion. The direction of pressure when shaping petals and the way the pieces overlap can be clearer when you watch the process. Use the printable PDF together with the original video tutorial and work through the flower one step at a time.

종이꽃은 사진만으로 설명하기 어려운 움직임이 있습니다. 꽃잎에 곡선을 만드는 방향이나 꽃잎을 겹치는 과정은 영상으로 보면 훨씬 직관적으로 이해되는 부분이 있어요. PDF 도안을 먼저 준비한 뒤 기존 튜토리얼 영상을 보면서 한 단계씩 따라 만들어보세요.

Looking at the Cosmos Again
| 2020년의 코스모스를 다시 꺼내보며

Looking at this cosmos again six years later, I notice details that I didn’t see before. This was how I saw and translated the cosmos into paper in 2020. But if I were to make it again today, what would it look like? Over the years, as I’ve continued making paper flowers, both the way I observe plants and the way I work with paper have gradually changed. That is why I’ve decided not to revise this free cosmos template using the techniques and perspective I have today.

I want to leave it as it is: a record of how Seulpaper observed and created the cosmos in 2020.

Someday, I would like to return to the cosmos, observe the flower again through the eyes I have now, and develop it into a new template. Perhaps placing the 2020 cosmos beside a newly developed version would tell a story more interesting than either flower could tell on its own.

How does the way one artist sees the same plant change over time? Could that change itself become a story recorded in paper? Until then, I hope this little paper cosmos continues to bloom on someone’s desk, refrigerator, or wherever it happens to find a home.

6년 만에 이 코스모스를 다시 꺼내보니 예전에는 보이지 않았던 부분들이 눈에 들어옵니다. 2020년에는 이렇게 코스모스를 만들었는데, 지금 다시 만든다면 어떤 꽃이 될까. 그동안 여러 종이꽃을 만들면서 식물을 관찰하는 방식도, 종이를 다루는 방법도 조금씩 달라졌다는 걸 느낍니다. 그래서 이번 무료 코스모스 도안은 지금의 방식으로 수정하지 않기로 했어요.

2020년의 슬페이퍼가 코스모스를 바라봤던 시선과 만들었던 방법 그대로 남겨두려고 합니다.

그리고 언젠가 코스모스를 다시 만든다면 그때는 지금의 시선으로 꽃을 다시 관찰하고 새로운 도안으로 발전시켜보고 싶어요. 2020년의 코스모스와 새롭게 만들어질 코스모스를 나란히 놓으면 한 송이의 꽃보다 조금 더 재미있는 이야기가 보일지도 모르겠습니다.

같은 사람이 같은 식물을 바라보는 방식이 시간에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지. 그 변화 역시 종이로 기록할 수 있는 이야기가 되지 않을까요? 그때까지 이 작은 코스모스가 누군가의 책상과 냉장고 위에서 오래 피어 있기를 바랍니다.
