Why I Wanted a Different Scale
| 다른 크기를 시도하고 싶었던 이유
작은 종이꽃을 만들 때는 늘 생화와 비교하게 되곤 합니다. 그래서 그런지 크기와 형태가 비슷할수록 잘 만든 꽃이라는 기준이 자연스럽게 따라옵니다. 어느 날 저는 그 비교에서 벗어나 보고 싶다는 생각을 하게 됐어요. 생화와 나란히 두고 비교하는 대신, 세상에 존재하면서도 존재하지 않는 것처럼 느껴지는 크기의 꽃을 만들어보고 싶었습니다. 그래서 이전과는 다른 훨씬 큰 스케일을 시도하게 되었습니다.
When I make small paper flowers, I always end up comparing them to fresh flowers. Maybe that’s why the standard for a well-made flower naturally becomes how closely its size and form match the real thing. One day, I wanted to step away from that comparison. Instead of placing it beside a fresh flower, I wanted to make something whose scale would make it feel like it exists and doesn’t exist at the same time. So I decided to try a much larger scale than before.
Choosing Blue for the First Jumbo Rose
| 첫 점보장미로 파란색을 고른 이유
제가 처음 만든 점보 사이즈 장미는 파란색이었어요. 파란 장미의 꽃말은 기적, 희망, 가능성을 의미합니다. 그래서 첫 점보 장미의 색으로 파란색을 선택했어요. 장미의 크기를 키우는 것 자체가 파란 장미의 꽃말과 직접적으로 연결된다는 생각이 들었거든요.
The first jumbo-size rose I made was blue. In flower language, blue roses mean miracle, hope, and possibility. So I chose blue for my first jumbo rose. Increasing the rose’s scale itself felt directly connected to that meaning.
How I Held the Rose Together
| 장미를 어떻게 고정했을까
크기를 키우며 장미를 어떻게 하면 더 단단하게 고정할 수 있을까를 고민했어요. 그래서 장미의 내부에는 스티로폼 구를 넣어 고정해보기로 했습니다. 작업을 시작할 때 최종 크기를 미리 정해두지는 않았지만 만들다 보니 구의 크기와 가장 먼저 붙이는 꽃잎의 크기가 이후 전체 비율에 영향을 주었습니다. 그래서 처음 몇 장의 꽃잎 크기를 결정하는 과정 자체가 전체 장미의 크기를 자연스럽게 결정한다는 걸 깨닫게 되었습니다.
As the rose grew larger, I found myself thinking about how to hold it together more firmly. So I decided to place a styrofoam sphere inside as a core. I didn’t set the final size before starting, but as I worked, the size of the sphere and the first petal I attached ended up affecting the overall proportion. I realized that deciding the size of the first few petals naturally determined the size of the whole rose.
Petal Placement and a Small Variation
| 꽃잎 배치와 작은 변화
꽃을 제작하면서 안쪽 꽃잎은 촘촘하게, 바깥쪽으로 갈수록 꽃잎 사이의 간격을 조금씩 넓혀갔습니다. 동시에 꽃이 서서히 벌어지는 형태를 만들기 위해 노력했어요. 또한, 가장 바깥쪽 꽃잎들은 주름지를 비틀어 정돈된 느낌에서 벗어나도록 만들어 보았습니다. 이전에 만들던 부드럽고 규칙적인 장미의 모습에서 조금 변형을 주고 싶었기 때문이에요.
While making the flower, I placed the inner petals close together, gradually widening the spacing toward the outside. At the same time, I tried to shape the flower so it would seem to open slowly. I also twisted the outermost petals in crepe paper so they would break away from a neat, orderly feel — a small variation from the softer, more regular roses I used to make.

| 파란 장미를 다시 살펴보며
파란 장미는 제가 만든 첫 번째 점보 사이즈 장미입니다. 작은 종이꽃에서 시작해 이렇게 큰 크기의 장미를 완성한 것은 이때가 처음이었어요. 지금도 이 장미를 볼 때마다 처음 시도했던 크기와 색을 떠올리게 됩니다. 개인 작업으로 점보 사이즈의 첫 결과물인 만큼 여전히 의미가 있는 작업이라 생각이 됩니다.
This blue rose is the first jumbo-size rose I made. It was the first time I completed a rose this large, starting from small paper flowers. Even now, whenever I look at it, I remember the size and color I first attempted. As the first jumbo-size result of a personal project, I still think it holds meaning.
